Description

The inglorious end of Columbus' second voyage: he landed in Cadiz on June 11, 1496, humiliated and disappointed, having lost almost his entire fleet and without having found the gold promised to the Spanish royal family.

Another beautiful page from this less known but remarkable work by Manara that I've been able to reassemble (in fact both the panels were drawn on a single large artboard, which was cut in half at some point).
I really like the way Milo draws inspiration from the Old Master paintings. And, in my opinion, that bottom panel is one of the best of the whole book.

Written by Italian journalist and popularizer Enzo Biagi and beautifully illustrated by Milo Manara (54 pages) and Giacinto Gaudenzi (37 pages), this biography in comics of the great explorer and navigator was first published in Italy in 1991 (by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore) and then in other European countries.

The coloring on the face is spot on like a stain that he won't be able to hide or go away.
