DescriptionI cut my teeth on Daredevil during the classic Ann Nocenti/John Romita, Jr. run during the 1980's. During the run, there was a particularly poignant issue (#266 to be exact) in which a roughed-up DD seeks solace during the holidays in a bar. While there, Mephisto, disguised as a flirtatious brunette (DD's weakness, of course) tries to tempt him, eventually revealing his true identity when DD fails to take the bait. The title of that issue was "A Beer With the Devil," which, for some reason, has stuck with me over the years. Recently, I realized that not only did that title have some historic resonance, but it also could serve as the basis for a really fun DD-centric theme for commissions, in which DD shares some suds with one or more characters of the artist's choosing. For this commission request, I, once again, recruited the talents of my buddy and artist extraordinaire, John Lucas, to bring to life a scene with Daredevil and the Ani-Men (Ape-Man, Bird-Man, Cat-Man and Frog-Man) sharing some suds (perhaps after a madcap melee). Well, once again, this seed of an idea blossomed into something bizarrely amazing in John's hands, as I naturally anticipated that it would. Not only is John's Cat-man one of the most awesomely conceived renditions of all time, but each of the Ani-Men are bursting with visual nuance and pathos. Then, the floodgates open, and my childhood has been joyfully and bizarrely pillaged of all its iconic anthropomorphic characters in a Star Wars Cantina-like mash-up of mirth, mayhem, and morosity. How surreally satisfying. According to John, "There’s moose and rabbit from captain kangaroo, the owl and cat from Mr Rogers, Kermit and Fozzie, QuickDraw and Babbalooey, Tom, Chilly Willy, Bugs, Big Bird, Lambchop (with Sherry Lewis out of frame), the Hippo and Owl from Great Space Coaster, Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, Pogo Possum, Snoopy." Thanks, Uncle Johnny! This is a work of wonder. I cannot recommend John highly enough for his genius in bringing ideas to life. He's an artistic magician of the highest order. Social/Sharing |

John did an awesome job! If I had a Bar I would have this framed in a prime location! Congrats!

Lucas has got that JRJR / Williamson style in handling black and white. An all star line up plus some more obscure animal based characters who just want to drown their sorrows for the day or feel numb after taking cartoon abuse all day.
