Sketch cover, does that mean unpublished?
Sketch covers are covers with no images on them from the publisher that the buyer can use to commission an artist to create an image for them. Underneath is the actual published cover. These are variant editions. So the artwork is unique. Artists also purchase these to do a cover they would like to offer to the public.
The black background makes it look like he scorched the cover!
