Description

Daredevil # 119 page 18 and 19
Art by Michael Lark & Stefano Gaudiano
Written by Ed Brubaker
Marvel Comics - June 2009

A quick aside. I just finished watching the recent ECHO series on Disney+ which reminded me to post this page. I enjoyed it and I especially enjoyed seeing Vincent D'Onofrio play the Kingpin again. I can’t help but see him now in the 5th panel of page 19!

Back to the comic. Kingpin and Lady Bullseye first met in Daredevil #116 and it was a violent encounter. This is second time the two meet and this time they are putting their differences aside to team up to take Daredevil down.

This piece came with some bonus art since series inker Stefano Gaudiano inked both page 18 and 19 on the same board. Lark did his pencils on two separate sheets. This was such a memorable arc with great writing and art. It was one of the first stories I read when I was getting back into comics as an adult in 2008/2009.

It was a beautiful run by Lark taking over for Maleev.  We still got that crime noir feel every month, now with more physical art.  Gaudiano adds a rich heavy feel to the inks as the dramatic tension and dread permeates through the whole page.

Great page! I really enjoyed Lark's run on the book, but feel like he is often over looked when people discuss great artist runs on DD.

I haven't read them all but I totally agree. This arc with Brubaker was so good and a top one for me as well.

Absolutely fabulous storytelling and the Gaudiano finishes over Lark's pencils are sublime. George, do you know if Lark is doing all his backgrounds digitally, or whether they're all penciled on separate sheets? It's really "interesting" way to work, I must say.

Thanks, Ruben! It's my understanding that all the background were added digitally using some photo references before the inking stage and then Guadiano would print off the digital pencils with digitally added backgrounds to ink traditionally. I don't always love hyper realistic comics but I thought it worked well with Lark's style.

Great piece from a a great read, George.  And yes!  Can absolutely picture and hear D'Onofrio in panel 5 :)  Great shot of Lady of Bullseye at the bottom, too.  Congrats!

Lark's style is perfect for DD and Brubaker -- a good read and run.
