Description

A vintage (1984) sketch by the ever-great Bob Mcleod.

Done after his legendary stint on New Mutants and probably around his issues for Star Wars, the obvious sweet spot for a kid of the 80s 😊

Bob’s published and commission work has always been impeccable (up to this day) but when I saw this sketch at auction I was super impressed by its quality. It’s likely a convention sketch and that Bob added a fallen sentinel next Wolvie is impressive in that context.

Wolverine benefits from the usual Mcleod strong figure work. You can see the similarities with Byrne’s work (as their styles share many). He may be a bit beefier than Byrne’s version. I love his face, especially his mouth. He looks ready to rumble, super tense (just look at his trapezes).

Like I said, the inclusion of a fallen sentinel is a true bonus and really elevates the piece as a whole. It also gives a sense of scale to the scene. You will note that this is blue and grey version of the sentinels that Bob redesigned during his New Mutants run. Clearly, the robot has seen better days and the clawed-out eye is particularly gruesome.

Bob has always been known as a very gifted inker so it’s no surprise that I find the inks to be particularly slick here (again, for a convention piece).

Many will frown on the unpublished production in our hobby but when the quality is this high, I’ll happy add a “simple” convention sketch to the collection.

This is stunning ! I've been a Bob Mcleod fan for many years and to see such an incredible Wolverine piece from (fairly) early in his career is a delight !

Something this polished is not really a sketch. Super stuff.

The paper having come from a ringed sketchbook indicates con sketch, but the quality of the ink, which appears to be India from a bottle, along with the finish level, indicates "home commission". Tough to say, but either way, it is one of the best vintage McLeod pieces I've ever seen. The sense of scale that Sentinels always bring to the proceedings is why pages and commissions always look so much more exciting when they're included, whether they're fully functioning or already turned into scrap metal! Congrats on a great piece!

Undoubtably, the OML version of a "fastball special".  Bob McLeod is always on point.

Whoa - what a FANTASTIC Wolverine!  The figure work is outstanding; he looks both strong -and- mean enough to take down one of those bad boys and be ready and raring for more.  He hardly broke a sweat!  The eye being carved out is a particularly wicked touch. :) Great add, F M - congrats!

Outstanding! Love this image of Wolverine standing beside the Sentinel he's brought down. You really don't realize how huge these things are until you see someone standing next to one. Gorgeous work by Bob McLeod!

So good!  Sentinels are one of my favorite comic designs after and part of that is seeing some X battle aftermath.  "Now you're a tin can, bub"  Love it.  Congrats!

Bob did amazing work here that's as a fresh today as it was when he first drew it.  Really nice stuff!
