Great storytelling with this page! It's an action page, but more than that, it has gamesmanship with matching of wits and guile that tests Spidey! No Spidey-Sense to warn him of this sneak attack!

I was just coming on to question if this was a time when Peter's Spidey-Sense was on the blink, but a quick search revealed that he found Kingpin's hideout in this issue using his Spidey-Sense, so that can't be the case. No one should be able to play possum on Spidey with his Spidey-Sense, but suspension of disbelief (like a man can actually have the powers of a spider) are what make comic books so dang entertaining, like this piece of Romita comics history!

Its takes a lot of supension to believe a fat guy could take on Spider-Man. Even more than believing getting bitten by a spider could give you super powers.
