Description

Under the pen name Saki, Edwardian writer H.H. Munroe satirized the generation between Oscar Wilde and P.G. Wodehouse. In this very short and very silly 1914 story about a prank, a girl convinces her visiting uncle that her father is dead; when Dad instead arrives home, the uncle freaks out and runs away, thinking he has seen a ghost.

The low-stakes tale was adapted by Orson Welles as a radio drama and was also included on an Alfred Hitchcock-branded album of ghost stories for children. In this scene, the mischievous girl and her uncle look out through the titular window, through which her dad will soon be seen.

This particular illustration accompanied the story in a 1981 anthology 'Twenty Two Tales' released by the Franklin Library press. The decor seems more recent than 1914 to me.
