Description

this unattached plate with actual original pencil art came with as part of the 'Super-Deluxe' edition of my low number copy (17) of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition (s&n of 400) of Mark Wheatley's book 'Gray Morrow Visionary'
Now you can argue that as drawn by Gray, this could easily be any similar masked character, like Green Hornet, The Spider, or even a modernized Zorro or Phantom Stranger, but the post-it note on the other side of this plate, in Gray's hand, does indeed say 'Phantom Detective'
Incidentally PD was the longest-running publication, 1933-1953 & 170 issues, of a masked-hero character in pulps, even more than The Shadow - although The Shadow had more issues, 325, in a shorter lifespan, 1931-1949. Doc Savage had 181 from 1933-1949.
