Description

Although not well known in the USA, the supernatural investigator (think John Constantine) Dylan Dog moves 120,000 issues monthly in Italy. In this story "Il Bianco e il Nero" ("The White and the Black"), Dylan comes face to face with the Boogeyman and his henchmen, one of whom graces this climactic splash page and declares, "I am Fear!"

Indeed, Dylan Dog itself is printed in black and white rather than greyscale, and this page shows the limitations of that publication technology. Longtime DD artist Corrado Roi went all out with some incredibly detailed stippling and splatter on both the foreground figure and the creepy background nightmare faces. But much of it is lost in reproduction, as you can see from the published page. The more detailed picture I took with my iPhone is a slightly mixed blessing since it also reveals some of the uneven inking of the blocky black areas; this shows that that artist knows what he can get away with for the final product.

Very haunting! His technique puts a layer of atmosphere unlike anyone else out there.
