Was this meant to be used in his lets play chess book and rejected by the editor? I just checked my copy. Its not there but is very similar to what was used. He illustrated a book that was published in 1980 called lets play chess, written by Anthony Hansford. Maybe the editor saw this and asked him for similar? In the book cover the guy is riding on a chess board knocking over the king. The whole book is heavily illustrated by John. Well worth tracking down a copy if you like his work.
