DescriptionIconic published portrait of the animated style Batman(cleaned up, based on the original sketch by Bruce Timm). This image was created for the first style guide of the show and was used in a preview article published in Wizard Magazine #12 and later on in countless merchandise items. It's a bit difficult to pinpoint a "first appearance" of an animated look; I'd consider the style guide itself as something used "in house" (which doesn't count as a proper publication). IMO, the first printed article is what would count as a first appearance, the question I'm still trying to solve is: was the WIZARD MAGAZINE #12 article the first print preview of Batman The Animated Series (hence its 1st appearance) ? Wizard Magazine #12 cover date is August 1992, but was actually distributed in June. Let me know if you know of any other earlier articles/images in print and I'll update my description accordingly. Thanks :) Social/Sharing |

Clean and classic look! Hard to tell the definition of printed appearance as they probably printed and copied the Timm style guide used amongst the animators first, at least a year ahead of 1992. Thye probably shared a lot of the images throughout the Hollywood trades for pubicity.

I posted on your CGC thread as well.
It would be worth tracking down when Wizard #12 was published. An August 30, 1992 published image was sold last year on Heritage. It was a newspaper promotional ad with Harley as well. I could be wrong, but that's the earliest I have found.
Here is a video discussing the Wizard #12 issue for reference. Your Batman image comes up at the 1:11:20 mark.
It looks like your Batman head from Wizard magazine may predate this Batman ad by a week or two if you can figure out the release date, so yours could be first animated Batman, but the cel ad would be first Harley Quinn since she was not in the Wizard ad.

Doesn't get much more iconic than this! Beautiful Batman headshot, drawn in the classic animated Batman style! Simple, clean and memorable!
