Description

Harlan Draka, son of Dracula, hunts all sorts of monsters in this Italian series. This issue is entitled "In the Desert of Atacama." His captive is Erwin Rogers, a policeman from a town called Condor, at which they have just arrived.

"Condor Saltpeter Office"

"Now I understand! This looks like an open-air museum or a movie set! I knew a factory wouldn't be that big!"

"It was not just a factory, Kurjak. The actual workshop, where the saltpeter was transformed into nitrate, is that building over there. In addition to the industrial sheds, there were houses for workers and employees, a school, shops... even a theater and a pool."

"A model village, one could say."

"Apparently! Here and in the similar communities of the region, the workers were not paid in currency, but with tokens that could be used exclusively within the town."

"Of course the basic necessities were paid for at a very high price, compared to their current price." "Am I wrong, or is this a perfect example of capitalist exploitation?"

"You are not wrong at all! In this and other factories, protests and strikes were put down through bloodshed. After the massacre of Santa Maria de Iquique, the folk group Quilapayun recorded a famous cantata about it on vinyl. It was a big hit in its day. My friend Juan Lopez collaborated with them."

"Where are the guards, Baldwyn? Is it possible that they sleep so soundly that they haven't didn't notice the train?"

Quilapayun is a real band from Chile. The massacre of protesting miners was also real. It occurred in 1907 in Iquique, Chile. The album about it came out in 1970.
