E.T. (Edward Tennyson) Reed (1860-1933) was a fantastic British cartoonist who was also a mainstay at Punch magazine. In fact, Reed succeeded Harry Furniss as Punch’s political cartoonist in 1893. Reed may be most well known for his feature “Prehistoric Peeps”, which later became an animated short during the silent era.

I’m very pleased to offer up a wonderful E.T. Reed cartoon that appeared in the June 7, 1899 issue of Punch. The piece features Sir Lewis McIver, a Scottish MP from Edinburgh West. At the time this cartoon was published, McIver was seeking funds to help revise the postal service in Ediburgh. The piece depicts three fellow MPs attempting to carry a caber to the "Southrons". Reed’s ink work in the cartoon is terrific. There are almost shades of W. Heath Robinson in the drawing, even though it predates Robinson's mature style that most folks know him for. But check out all of the tiny details, especially the shading and texture that Reed brought to McIver. It’s masterful stuff.

The image area measures 8¼”x 7”. The cartoon comes with the original presentation mat, as pictured in the additional images. Overall, the piece measures near 16”x 14½”. For a piece that is 124 years old, the condition is remarkably good. You can see some slight sunning from a previous framing, but overall, the artwork is in solid Fine- condition. The artwork is affixed to the mat with archival tape. $250.00 + 16.00 Priority Mail shipping.
