DescriptionWhen it comes to Gil Kane, there has to be a fair amount of guesswork to some of his pages. He seemed to have a lot of ideas & projects floating about, with orphaned pages often appearing in drips & drabs. IIRC Blackmark was his second foray into self-publishing, behind His Name Is Savage!, which are two of the precursors to all that we call graphic novels. I really liked the two Blackmark stories we did get, and I wonder why the IP wasn't picked up by somebody making Sci-Fi & Fantasy flicks. Maybe not as a big budget blockbuster, it's just too bad we didn't at least get a Roger Corman production of GIL KANE'S BLACKMARK starring John Saxon by the early 80’s. I'm sure that would've been a long cherished cult classic by today! When I first saw these pages, I thought they were most likely skipped over chapter splashes for the 2nd installment "The Mind Demons". But, their lack of the odd-sized format and 7-hole punched paper, plus no chapter stats or glue stains say they probably weren’t outtakes. So, a quick search showed there was a scheduled Schanes & Schanes Blackmark portfolio from Gil in the works for 1978 (See Additional Images), but I can't find that it was ever published. I certainly would have picked it up! So, I'm going with unpublished portfolio plates. And, since I missed out on the Pini-owned other pin-up very close to this image, I had to jump on this one—Thanks, Peter! Art from 1972 - 11.5x17.5. Social/Sharing |

72 was a very good year. And today was a very good day or so I was told.

That's a really nice piece from when Kane was in his prime.

The essential Blackmark! I ageee with you it's a pity the character dwindled out: the story had so much potential!
