Celebrating the birthday of artist Mike Grell, September 13, 1947. Happy 76th Birthday to my favorite artist.

Green Arrow has always been one of my favorite characters. Long before comics I was a fan of the Errol Flynn Robin Hood film, I used to watch it all the time as a young child. The archery, the sword play, the fighting for right over wrong and Errol Flynn, it was everything cool to me as a kid. I was a huge fan of Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters. I immediately became a Mike Grell fan, loving the art and story.

I couldn't get enough, so I went back issue hunting for any Mike Grell book, even if he only did the cover art. I was introduced to Warlord and started reading that book. One day my local comic shop owner recommended a title called Jon Sable. She said it was some of Grell's best work. I started buying all the back issues I could. I loved the series, one of the best books of the 80's.

The Grell hierarchy for me is 1) Green Arrow 2)Jon Sable 3) Warlord.

I bought this all pencil cover in 2019. Grell's process at the time was to fully pencil the covers and then go straight to paint for the published covers. No inks exist. Just these beautiful pencils and the finished painting. Gorgeous pencils!!

This is a great illustration by Grell! It has a paperback novel cover design and has symbolism of a man conquering nature for Jon Sable.
