Description

BLINK’S CHOICE - IT’S YOUR FUNERAL - Magnus’s body returned to his parents Rogue and Magneto

EXILES was the Marvel equivalent to DC’s Suicide Squad and TV’s SLIDERS, but with a lot more heart and mixed with the WHAT IF for all the various realities they would visit and immerse themselves in. The first volume of 100 issues that came out in 2001 and ran through to 2008, was an amazing series, the volumes that came after fell short. This series dealt with a lot of themes, really well and didn’t shy away from dealing with death and the aftermath of losing loved ones with horrific consequences. With this series, it was rare to see a mission go without major consequences.

This particular issue, deals with the aftermath of all these losses over their many missions. It’s a really great issue, I tend to really like the sad soap-opera story pages. This page features Magnus of Earth 27 (son of Magneto and Rogue) body being returned home to them for closure. This version of Magnus first appeared in Exiles #1 (2001), similar to Magneto he could control metal, and unfortunately similar to Rogue flesh to flesh contact had dire consequences, in his case he would turn whatever person he touched to steel. He was originally conceived in the AOA saga but didn’t see much life after that, similar to Blink, til the EXILES series. But sadly didn’t get much of a break as he was the first one to die in issue #2, when he saved the team from an explosion in a reality where Xavier was evil and Magneto was building a salvation for mutants. Then years later (issue #83), we finally got to se him return home, unfortunately it was in a body bag with a note: “This is Magnus son of Magneto and Rogue. He gave his life to save us, and died a hero.”

This page initially caught my eye as it was a nice relationship page between Magneto and Rogue. Their love story throughout X-Men history has been mixed with torment and unwelcome (but similar to Rogue and Gambit’s relationship it’s full of explosive chemistry), I’ve always wanted a page to showcase it. Getting a piece from their first real encounters in this manner is really difficult as those are Savage Land Rogue pieces drawn by Jim Lee and that is currently way out of my budget, so I will just enjoy those from afar. Then we got to see their relationship develop and evolve beautifully in the harsh alternate reality of AOA, and eventually got a bit of their romance in various issues of X-Men Legacy and Rogue/Joseph love story in X-Men Unlimited #11 (1996).

The emotion really comes through, even without any dialog.  Nice perspective on that great opening shot of Magneto flying down.

I was a big fan of the first Exiles series, and this is a great pickup from it.
