While Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster are w/o a doubt best known for creating Superman, he wasn't the only superhero they whipped up during the Golden Age of comics. Enter Funnyman, a clownish superhero w/a more comedic approach to superheroics. Unlike other characters they created, Siegel and Shuster were determined to retain the copyright to Funnyman. This was unacceptable to DC Comics, so they instead made a deal with Magazine Enterprises of Canada Ltd. The Funnyman series only lasted six issues, and a subsequent newspaper comic strip also fizzled. Funnyman proved to be the last professional collaboration of Siegel and Shuster, as Shuster's vision had deteriorated to the point he could no longer work. Offered here is pen and ink original art w/layouts for Funnyman #2 (March 1948) by Shuster and finished pencils by John Sikela and inked by Siegel and Shuster Studio/Shuster Shop. Title page features seven panels, featuring classic slapstick portrayals of practical jokes pulled by Funnyman, who appears in every panel. Title stat affixed to first panel w/printed title glued in place above art. Back features Shuster's preliminary pencils repeated. Margins have some scattered editorial pencil notes w/title and issue number penciled at bottom margin. Artboard has some margin aging and shows moderate wear to top margin w/corner foxing. Artboard is Fine overall, but art could be matted and framed for nice display. Scarce art from a short-lived Golden Age title. Harry Matetsky Collection.
