Description

Though published in the Krakoa era, this four-issue mini-series occurs in the mid-1980s wake of Uncanny X-Men #200, in which Professor Xavier left earth, entrusting the New Mutants to the tutelage of his former nemesis Magneto. The story by J.M. DeMatteis finds Magneto and his students all struggling to reconcile his new job with his villainous past. On this page, a hologram of Master Mold catches the kids unawares during a Danger Room training session, and Magneto gives them the "expect the unexpected" speech.

Todd Nauck (like myself) was one of many kids delighted by Art Adams' work on the New Mutants Special Edition Asgard story, and he seems to have enjoyed this opportunity to depict the team during that era, right down to Karma's cute face-framing haircut, predating Jennifer Aniston by years. In fact, each kid has a distinct haircut. And remember when Magneto wore opera gloves and this bizarre unitard with a big "M" on it? That didn't last long, thankfully.

Todd's workflow involved a digital rough layout, printed and then improved with pencil, then inked. Three of the four panels show all nine team members, including one from Mageto's POV as they glare at him and nurse their bruises.

Awesome page loaded with characters. Been a fan of Nauck's work since Young Justice.

Not super familiar with Todd, but this is a great page and he handles the multiple characters well
