Description

Where should I begin in introducing this piece... To me, this page of comic art may be Don Rosa's greatest achievement. When I requested a commission from Don years ago, my first impulse was to ask for a drawing of Scrooge in that second-to-last panel of this page. I hesitated in doing that, however, because I felt it might have slightly cheapened the significance of this special moment within the story. Of course, I did not even consider I'd someday get to acquire the original art of this scene!

In terms of suspense, I would say this page represents the climax of Lo$; it depicts Scrooge overcoming his final adversity before his fortunes turn and he finds the goose egg nugget in the last pages of the chapter. Don also concludes in an introduction to the chapter that, in Shakespearean terms, Scrooge's arc peaks at this moment in Lo$ when he transcends into legend and goes on to single-handedly destroy Soapy's casino boat. Of course, Don was keen to note that he purposefully exaggerated these succeeding events to underscore how legends form as tales spread from one person to the next.

What strikes me the most when seeing this page live is how large the figure of Scrooge really is in that second-to-last panel. The 1 € coin I've placed beside the drawing is my poor attempt at illustrating its scale. I don't think there's a larger close-up of Scrooge in Lo$, which serves to underscore the climactic weight of the scene (discounting that close-up of Scrooge's bill as he whispers "Goldie" on that first page of chapter 12). It'd be interesting to know if this was something Don knowingly planned when illustrating the story. Another remarkable feature of the piece is those dark black areas, which seem fuller and even more finely detailed than in many other pieces I've seen by Don. No doubt, the emotional arc this page delivers held great significance for its author as well. There is also an interesting detail in that panel with Scrooge's blacked-out profile: apparently, Don considered leaving Scrooge's pupil white as that area of his eye looks to have been inked separately on top of everything else.

A great page! I like the detail and the "unmotivated lighting" in the last panel. I think the kind of touches only Don Rosa could provide.
