Absolutely GORZGEOUS piece, Sam, that is taken over the top by Alex's always superb (and striking) sense of color.  The dull mustard background color underscores the feeling of true isolation even more than a pitch black (or starry background) would, in my opinion.  In those sitiuations, the viewer would feel the Surfer's loneliness, but in the context of the beauteous wonder of the universe ("so it's okay")...  Here, amid a desolate (possibly toxic) environment, there's isolation, yes, but also a sense of sadness or despair.  Of self-exile.  Very, VERY powerful and emotional work from Alex.  What a piece!  Sincere congrats, Sam: this is fantastic!
