Description

A few months ago, a friend put Edison Neo on my radar. This talented artist from Singapore has been creating his own self-published comics & some variant covers for TMNT at IDW. That he'll be going places, is clear from his work - and the reaction by other artists like Daniel Warren Johnson having given their blessing.

For those who might not yet have checked this commission: Edison is a skateboarding fan. When I mentioned "Spider-Man in NYC", he immediately went with the idea of the shutdown Brooklyn Banks skatepark, turning back time as the background suggests. You can basically find the exact spot he drew here on Google Maps via clues in the background.

A skateboard commission needs a dynamic composition & that is why Edison pushes the central figure with the Spidey hoodie to the foreground. The white marker outline makes him almost jump out of the frame even more. Such a clever addition.

We would almost forget the excellent Spidey figure in the background. Having that skyline be so clear, makes the webhead unmissable & creates a clear thematical link between the two key figures in this piece, as well as the fore- and background.

A fun & dynamic piece of art with an original spin on a classic idea!

This commission took about half a year to complete, was done in pencils, inks & ink wash, and was created on A4-sized art board.
