DescriptionHappy New Year everyone!Saved a banger to kick off my CAF 2024 … a page from a hidden X-men Gem Bizarre Adventures 27. An obscure book as it was magazine sized black and white anthology from the early 80s but most big X-men fans know about it … and while each story was fun the Phoenix Story was always my favorite . So being able to acquire a page from that one is pretty cool! And I mean getting any Phoenix page from the early 80s is a pretty big deal. This is actually structured as a flashback from Jeans Sister Sara while visiting Jean’s grave. That adds even more meaning to me as this is really the only Phoenix story that came out after X-men 137 and chronologically is around X-men 109. The page itself is near the end of the story and just absolutely gorgeous in person. Prime Buscema Janson here and since it was drawn to be printed in black and white it features a lot of grey tones , ink wash and unique inking (like th Phoenix bird of flame) that you wouldn’t usually see in original art from the time period. In addition John Buscema X-men art is not a common occurrence. And having Sara Grey in her Atlantean outfit from the story gives it a little sword and scorcery feel that Big John was so known for! Like any X-Men crossover back then, it was the most sought after issue of the title and always stuck out in the price guide with a picture of it. Even more than Elektra by Miller and Lawnmower Man by Stephen King in the issues after. This is definitely a bizarre story as Attuma wanted to make Jean and Sara his brides to make powerful hybrid babies to conquer the earth. Regardless, the artwork here is painterly by two masters with the wash serving as the perfect medium to signify its more sophisitcated tone.
