Description

Stout offers an unnerving, lifelike portrait of Ed Gein, the serial murderer and practicing cannibal whose crimes provided the backhanded inspiration for Robert Bloch's Psycho and Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, among others (Stout and Hooper would work together, during the 1980s). This piece -- itself inspired by EC Comics' horror titles -- also demonstrates an abundance of grim humor: Note the copy of Gray's Anatomy at lower right; the face of EC's Old Witch character (from The Haunt of Fear); and a nod to Stout's artist pal Bernie Wrightson at lower left, just behind the signature.
