Description
An obligatory fight scene in this alternate history with superheroes. I'm not often attracted to hero fights for the collection but I do like the driving power down into the bottom right of this big page. One of the fun things about Stipan's work on 20th Century Men is how he decides he's a different artist page to page and even panel to panel to serve the story. It shouldn't work but it powered the book with fearless energy. I think if you look at the pieces by Stipan on CAF you wouldn't easily spot that it's the same artist.

Unique and powerful piece!  I think commercial necessity, more than artistic sensibility, drives most working artists to stick to a single style and familiar subjects

Oh my goodness! I haven't seen this soft touch from Stipan's work before (in OA) and it is stunning! Great choice!

That's exactly what attracted me. It's violent but the pencils are almost gentle.

So, I finished the trade on Wednesday, re-read #5 and #6 on Thursday - and then let the story marinate. What an utterly unexpected and thought-provoking read! The first thing I did was look up Deniz Camp - no way a white person wrote this, I found myself thinking (racistly). I thought the story was handled very deftly and relevantly. While some conclusions were inevitable, there remained an element of hope, which I enjoyed. I was almost scared to read issue 6. Of course, before coming back to report, I had to stop by Inky Knuckles for a souvenir 😜.

Look forward to your souvenir! I also looked up the creative team because it's not typical for a western comic to tell a tale like this with a such an ear to the voices of the colonised. I'm following whatever they do next individually while awaiting their next collaboration. I think Deniz is heading to Ultimate Avengers of all things. I'll be fascinated to see how he tackles the particularly American power fantasy of something like a Captain America in an actual mainstream cape comic. Have flicked you a great interview with the team to read while we wait for their comics!

A wonderfully soft use of tones to balance out the brutish and gritty battle.
