Description

Carolyn tells Nathan how parental neglect led to the drowning of her ten year old brother Peter:

“My [family] was [happy] once too, before my mother gave into her craving for Bacon... before Peter died.”

“The death of a ten-year old would disrupt any life.”

“Yes, it's true... and in fact it was like that for my father. My mother sometimes drank too much. That afternoon was one of those times.”

(In flashback, Bryan the robot approaches a drunken Alice Powell.) “Mr. Powell doesn't want you drinking in Peter's presence, ma'am.”

“Stupid robot! Don’t tell me what to do!” (Alice knocks Bryan into the swimming pool.)

“Bryan!”

“Forget about that useless robot! I'm going to rest, and don't try to disturb me. I'm very tired!”

“The blow was so strong that it damaged Bryan's circuits, immobilizing him. Peter tried to bring him to the surface, even though he couldn't swim. Perhaps due to the weight of the robot, he slipped into a place where the water was too deep for him. My father was always out, absorbed in his work, and when he returned, it was too late. My mother didn't notice anything.”

(Alice to Max) “That damned robot was supposed to save our son!”

“She even tried to blame Bryan. My father analyzed Bryan's memory and figured out how things had happened. He also discovered that mom had been on the phone with Bacon the whole time!”

Water plays a pivotal role throughout this story entitled "The Hidden Spring."

Randolph Duke: Exactly why do you think the price of pork bellies is going to keep going down, William?
Billy Ray Valentine: Okay. Pork belly prices have been dropping all morning, which means that everybody's waiting for it to hit rock bottom so they can buy cheap and go long. Which means that the people who own the pork belly contracts are goin' bat-shit. They're saying, "Hey, we're losing all our goddamn money, and Christmas is just around the corner, and I ain't gonna have no money to buy my son the G.I. Joe with the kung-fu grip, right? And my wife won't f... my wife won't make love to me 'cuz I ain't got no money, right?" So they're panicking right now, they're screaming "SELL! SELL!" to get out before the price keeps dropping. They're panicking out there right now! I can feel it! They out there!
