Description

[continued from the previous post]

I pick up enough pages from eBay and Heritage when they are within my budget range to feel by the end of the decade that I do not need any more and that I should let other people have a chance to acquire a page. Then at the very end of 2023 someone else starts putting up Journey pages on their eBay store page. He has page 6 of issue 20. I feel that I should adopt the policy Bill (Cox) has when he is on Duelling Dealers or when he is running a Talk and Sale episode – not jump in to claim as soon as I see a page which is desirable but give someone else a window of opportunity of perhaps a day or two. When 2023 turns into 2024 and the page does not sell with its “Buy it Now” option eBay keeps nagging me with those emails almost pleading with me to make an offer but still I decide to leave it open, yet after a few more days there are still no takers so I make an offer to the seller – I am not too proud to not haggle – and am pleasantly surprised to have it accepted within a couple of hours. As I lost out twice – once on eBay and once on Heritage – on the cover for the issue from which this page is taken I am more than happy to have a consecutive three-page sequence which demonstrates the dynamic between the chalk and cheese pairing of the uneasy travelling companions Josh MacAlistaire and Elmer Alyn Craft – one practical and stoic whilst the other is condescendingly loquacious, the centerpiece being the combined panel page and splash which is the bridge between the first two pages I ever bought, so that it seems a worthy substitute for the cover I missed out on, as well as providing a sense of closure for me – the first and last pages of Journey I bought all within the span of three pages. The seller of this last page to me is Rob Carlin who it seems has taken on the remaining unsold pages (including as of this writing the entire last ever issue including cover of Journey – Wardrums 2) other than those still on Bill’s website. He has said that he will continue to post pages from Journey on his eBay page from time to time. Thank you, Rob!

I cannot deny that I feel sorry that Bill has had to, because of financial difficulties, give up all his artwork. There is still a tremendous amount of goodwill towards him in the industry and amongst fans. Neal Adams and Cliff Meth edited a benefit book – Heroes and Villains – published by TwoMorrows for Bill, and both of his Go Fund Me campaigns (check out the numerous celebrity comics creators in the lists of donors) comfortably met their initial targets. The Hero Initiative, it has been reported, are now taking a hand in Bill and Nadine’s welfare, which is a very good reason to support the premier charity for those in need in the industry. They, I am sure I do not need to tell you, do excellent work.

My thanks to Frank and Hassan, the two organisers of UKCAC ’98, for giving me the opportunity to meet Bill and obtain the two wonderful drawings from him; and to Rod and Rob for what they have done to assist Bill; but thanks most of all to Bill himself for his contribution to the artform, and for the kindness and generosity he showed me back in March of 1998 – all best wishes on your fifteen and three score, and may you have many many more.

The art served a purpose being sold and it directly benefitted Messner-Loebs, so you should feel good about that as opposed to artists who sold their works early and didn't have it when they really needed the money.

As ever you are as right as rain. I should stop thinking that other people think like me – I think they call that projection – or there would not be any original art on the market. Or if the artist waited until they had the best price then they would never sell. Although I do feel it is a bit sad that the last (not latest) Journey page I bought earlier this year cost less than the first Journey page (which is arguably not as good) I got, even though 12 years separate the purchases.

Thank you for your endorsement which really means something as it is from someone who is also a big, probably bigger, fan of Journey.

Thank you for your positive comments. I am very lucky to have one of the rare not-so-widely-seen promotional pieces for the series.

Beloved by critics and readers alike in the '80s...no small feat at all. Deserves to be appreciated by a new audience. Always love to see OA I've never seen before from this series. Thanks for sharing!

Yep, loved by critics and fans alike, but unfortunately not enough of the latter it would seem which led to its cancellation. I always thought of Journey as a “cult comic” much like “cult movies”, which have a small but devoted following, and sometimes they can catch on with the wider public. Here’s hoping Journey does get its due in popularity in the course of time. Thank you for your comment.
