DescriptionThis piece is notable for a number of reasons. First Ellery Queen's novel the Adventures of the Scarlet letter is about a frumpy 40 year old woman whose middle life crisis affair implicates her as a possible suspect in a series of murders. She of course is depicted on the cover by the ice blonde in the tight capri pants in the quintessential paperback bait and switch cover strategy that in the 1950's put nudes on the covers of biblical epics! This is one of those covers in which you can't tell if it is a mystery a romance or a modern day novel of suburban sex.We are still trying to identify the artist for this piece as it is only signed Rich and the biographer of Richard Powers does not show it in his list of sold covers. Powers though is credited with a series of Ellery Queen paperback covers during this time all done in a different style than his sci fi work (or his earleir kids paper back work) I beleive others are signed Rich

At the risk of sounding pedantic, let me say that when you refer to "a series" of Ellery Queen covers, you actually mean "A Calendar of Crime" (the only Powers / Ellery Queen pbk I can think of) then even that single book is not signed "Rich". Furthermore, I have NEVER seen any Powers art signed just plain "Rich" (and I've been around the block with good ol' Laz/Org! I guess anything's possible, but I don't think the artwork shown is RMP. Anyone else with an opinion?

During a midlife crisis, the white-haired man cruising in his Corvette doesn't see himself as a white-haired old man, but as a young man cruising to the drive-in to pick up girls. This cover depicts how the 40-year-old frump pictures herself during her midlife crisis.
Great painting.
