Description

In suburban Chile, someone is sitting in a car, watching the home of the journalist Ernesto Guerrero, whose doorbell soon rings:

“It’s ringing, Francisca! Can you get it?”

“Are you expecting guests, Ernesto?”

“No, I don’t think so. What's the matter, my dear? Our house is always open for friends, for anyone...”

“I know, but... don't think I'm crazy... I have a strange feeling. I often think back to the story of your life... the coup, the police knocking on the door, arresting people...”

“My little Francisca, I must have given you nightmares, with those old stories of mine. Times have changed, luckily! What’s gotten into your head?”

“I’m being a fool!”

“Don’t bother. I got up… Now I’m going!”

Francisca mentions the 1973 coup in which General Augusto Pinochet began a 16 year dictatorship, under which 3,000 Chileans disappeared in the night. It's understandable that older Chileans would worry about uninvited doorbells even in 2006. We also know that Condor has sent Erwin Rogers to assassinate Guerrero and bury another witness to those days.

Check out the negative space on the rack of utensils hanging on the wall in the kitchen. Francisca wipes her hands on the apron before removing it.

That regime was probably more scary than anything from Dampyr.  Journalists being threatened by the governement is a sign of a 3rd world country.

Man, Dotti cut no corners on his impressive backgrounds.

It is so clever, and apposite, to insert the horror genre into historic scenes of sheer human terror. The tension rises in these pages.

Yes, that concept is the bread and butter of this series, which started as a graphic novel using vampires as a metaphor of the disintegration of Yugoslavia. The authors followed up with a series of stories exploring the Russian mob, Blood Diamonds, land mines, the persecution of the Kurds, the Troubles in Ireland, racism in the American South, drug abuse, etc.

Exterior background details are excellent in panel 1 and 2. Interior background details are excellent throughout. Really like the kitchen background in Ernesto and Francisca's scene in particular. Dotti does it all!
