Description

Charlton's page 7 (last page) of "His Mother's Son" by an unknown writer.

Mousie's squad holds the ridge until wounded soldiers get through on the road below. Mousie is the squad's last soldier to reach the evacuation port. His waiting father proudly embraces him. The story concludes that he's not only his mother's son, but also his father's.

Historical background: The story places Mousie in the First Marine Division led by General Oliver P. Smith.

Unlike MacArthur, General Smith did not dismiss reports of Chinese soldiers hiding in the surrounding mountainous terrain after crossing the Yalu River.

He cautiously approached the North Korean border, despite MacArthur's orders to rapidly advance. He also prudently stockpiled supplies at strategic points along the route.

When the Chinese attacked, his division was able to break out and conduct a fighting, albeit bloody, retreat to the port of Hungnam where they had landed for evacuation.

The story paraphrases General Smith's words, "Retreat, hell! We’re not retreating, we’re just advancing in a different direction.”

The division’s counterparts to the east were not so fortunate. They had advanced quickly and were decimated by Chinese forces.

These always had a bittersweet endings even if the last image is a hopeful one.
