DescriptionThe last of my Question commissions. In 2004/2005 the Question had a bit of a resurgence. He appeared in a six issue mini series drawn by Tommy Lee Edwards and written by Rick Veitch. He also made an appearance in the Justice League Unlimited animated series. The JLU series introduced the Question to a whole new audience. Never thought I'd see the Question in a Justice League cartoon. It was awesome! There was not much Question art available (there still isn't now). So how was I going to get my Question fix, commissions! It's been a blast asking some of my favorite artists to draw the Question. Seeing everyone's interpretation of the character. Great ink wash piece by Scott Kolins. The grays give it a dirty/gritty feel and set the mood. The white of his eyes really stands out and gives him a spooky almost supernatural feel. Great image! The Question by Scott Kolins on a 11X17 board. 2023 Social/Sharing |

Yes, and how many years must a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?

The ink wash blends and weaves The Question right in with the cityscape and even reaches to the stars above! Those JLU appearances did make him a very charismatic figure challenging the animators to show expressiveness even without the face.

Yeah, this is your last Question commission, until you commission a bunch more! It's always fun to see which style Kolins will employ, as he has changed it up so many times over the last 25 years. Throughout his entire career, really.
There's still Question art out there, but come on man, you have to be willing to get into Renee Montoya, she's actually pretty cool! I even picked up a 5 page sequence (I'm a sucker for buying complete sequences!) from the Lois Lane maxi-series featuring Renee AND Vic Sage in a very Film Noir-ish scene including a fight sequence together. There's quite a lot of really nice Question art in that series in fact, but as I said, you have to be willing to broaden your horizons and accept the Montoya version!

I meant this is my last Question commission in hand. There are a few in the works and some long overdue. Until then this one is it.

So uniquely cool how Scott rendered the negative space, and how he used greys for the shadows. That upward perspective paired with the mist adds to both the heroic and ghostly factors! Great stuff. Congrats!

Question is a great character, and a great choice to get commissions of.
