Description"The World in Conflict: The Desert Fox." Desert warfare demanded new techniques and these were found in the shape of the quick-striking Long Range Desert Group. The art is a 15x21 gouache painting on board. This piece marks several firsts in my collection -- first UK art, first piece depicting British forces, first one of the North Africa theater, and first illustration by English artist Gerry Wood. Although not from a Bronze Age US comic, I'm including it in this gallery because the publication date falls within that period of time. The art is not the cover but an interior illustration. I initially thought the machine guns on British long-range patrol vehicles weren't accurate. Photos such as those I've uploaded show that's not the case. Presumably the cans on the front of the first jeep in the piece are for water, not gasoline... Look and Learn was a British weekly educational magazine for children published by Fleetway Publications Ltd from 1962 until 1982, according to Wikipedia. Gerry Wood is a British artist who started working for Fleetway Publications in the early 1960s, drawing for Battle Picture Library, based on Lambiek Comiclopedia. Wood contributed to Look and Learn, Treasure and Speed & Power in the 1970s, drawing mostly historical, military and transport subjects. He took over the artwork for the Trigan Empire series in 1977, which he continued until its end in 1982. He also has illustrated books. Social/Sharing |

A good countermeasure would have been some land mines on the main road! Very cool monotone color scheme to disguise the bloody and gory drive by violence!

The British patrol probably came upon the Germans in the middle of the "road-less" desert! If interested and have time, I can recommend the movie "Ice Cold in Alex" (1961) about several soldiers and nurses retreating across the desert during the war. I recently watched it and thought it was pretty good.

Nice monochromatic war piece! I've often thought about how cool it would be for any collector who is a war history buff to have the opportunity to collect war illustrations. Between all the mainstream American comic books, Men's Adventure magazines and paperback novel, combined with all the British produced art of the same, there is a never ending supply of material to be sought out and collected, often for very affordable prices! Most importantly, if you ARE a war history buff and have the desire to collect original art, how could you resist?

Thanks Ruben! Resistance is often futile.
