Description

Frankenstein versus the X-men...again! But first, I was asked to do a piece with X-men’s Colossus fighting the villain Juggernaut. Periodically, I would do several sketches, but was never happy with the composition. The cover of their first meeting in X-men #102 (1976) is still iconic in my mind. Since I’ve been doing a lot of “horror” related artwork these days, my friend Dino suggested recreating the cover to X-men #40 (1968). I loved the idea, but felt I had to do something different to make it my own. I kept going back to X-men #102 and my final decision was to incorporate both covers and create a “lost” story in my mind that would take place between #102 and #103. I numbered my cover #102 1/2.

A few notes regarding X-men #40: The cover to that issue was done by George Tuska. When the comic was reprinted in X-men #88 (1974), Marie Severin was asked to redraw parts of it, specifically Frankenstein’s face and some other elements. In addition, the Frankenstein in X-men #40 is not the Marvel Universe Frankenstein that would go on to meet Iron Man, Spider-Man, etc. He is actually an android that resembles the monster. With my recreation, I wanted the X-men to finally meet the “real” Frankenstein as he was rendered by Mike Ploog, John Buscema, and others. Enjoy!
