DescriptionWay back in 1989, I was happily surprised when John Byrne came onto WCA to begin his Vision Quest run. While a fan of the concept of a split Avengers team in CA, I wasn't enthralled with the art nor storylines of the previous 40+ issues. Byrne came in lit the book on fire with his short run on the book. On this page, we see Wonder Man, the Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, try to subdue an out-of-control Vision, who has been rebuilt without his previous memories intact. Beautiful use of ink and zipatone by Mike Machlan on the Scarlet Witch in particular.Social/Sharing |

Machlan inks such a clean line over Byrne. Wonderful page!

Machlan did a great job and had the smooth fully detailed thin ink line style that made the pages a lot closer in look to the X-Men days nearly a decade before.

While I still resent Byrne for "killing" one of my favourite Avengers, this page is impeccable, especially from a storytelling perspective. Byrne's choice of placement, body language and facial expressions of each characters is just perfect.

Love seeing Byrne draw all these characters. I agree with you, his WCA run was sadly far too short.

To my eye, this should be considered the gold standard for 90s and beyond modern comic book inking. Clearly delineated line work combined with well placed brush strokes with an occasional and not overdone hint of bravura. Mike was a master craftsman and absolutely missed.....

Man, what a Byrne example! So clearly him, with that incomparable look, but also love them clean Machlan inks and those zipatone accents...can't beat it. Congrats!
