DescriptionThe Phantom Detective, also called the Phantom, is a pulp hero who first appeared in 1933 in his eponymous magazine and subsequently in comics. He was in Thrilling Comics 53-70 from 1946 to 1949 and America's Best Comics 26 in 1948.Like many pulp heroes that inspired Batman, the Phantom was a wealthy figure who donned a costume to conceal his identity to fight crime. DC may have borrowed the idea for the Bat-Signal from the red searchlight calling forth the Phantom. Two early Batman editors, Jack Schiff and Mort Weisinger, got their start editing The Phantom Detective under editor-in-chief Leo Margulies, according to Wikipedia. The online article "Top 10: Pulp Magazine Heroes" by Jerry Whitworth has an excellent description of the character: https://comicartcommunity.com/comicart_news/top10-pulp-magazine-heroes/ Social/Sharing |

Agree. I lucked out in getting Jason Crager for a mystery sketch last year of a Golden Age Sandman.

I love this for no other reason than it's so much fun to see pulp characters being kept alive in modern times by contemporary artists.

I don't know, I tend to think Bob Kane created everything and the pulp heroes took from him! I mean this is a classic pose and cape work that you'd find in Batman comics. The thick white outline is great in giving Phantom an aura of mystery and magic!
