Description

Another side quest vanquished. This one courtesy of Mike "Romitaman" Burkey. I'm less than 2 hours from Mike so when I make a purchase from him, I usually just schedule a visit and head up with some donuts. Today I decided to drive the Mustang.

The Mustang, however, had other ideas for the day. She felt it was time for a new high pressure power steering hose. I suppose I can't blame her since the original hose was over 50 years old. Fortunately, the hose blew in the parking lot of the warehouse. After an hour of trying to chase a hose down around town I decided to just pull the belt off the pump and drive her back to the shop. That was a long five miles. I felt like I was driving the old Ford Jubilee Tractor.

The mechanical difficulties put me about 3 hours behind. I transferred everything over to the truck and headed off. From that point on was smooth sailing and I made great time. After I gave Burkey his Donuts and $, he was gracious enough to give me a tour. Simply Amazing art and stories. The toy room was incredible! After the tour was done, and the bullshit session was over, I put the page in the backpack and headed for home.

As for the art? Mike put a couple of pages from this issue up on his site a month or so ago. The first thing that jumped out at me on this page was the hand drawn ad for House of Secrets on the bottom one-third of the page. That title took a hiatus between issues 80 (7/66) and 81 (3/69). So this is a relaunch ad. I love little things like this that you can't find in today's comics. What is even better is the thing that drew me to the page actually made the page cheaper! Most people do not want two-thirds of a page of OA. Good thing I am not like most people.

I also like that this is the last page from an unusual short story. The Spectre begins narrating the story of Johnny. A small-time crook who has recurring nightmares of running over a child to escape capture for his crimes. As the narration continues, Johnny wakes from his dream and proceeds to rob a grocery store. As he flees the cops, he comes across a kid in the road. The Spectre forms an invisible shield around the kid for protection from Johnny. But, to the surprise of The Spectre, Johnny decides he cannot kill a kid and swerves at the last second, striking a light pole and killing himself. In true Spectre fashion, he does not admit to being wrong about Johnny, but only that he misjudged him.

Kind of like I misjudged the radiator fan and the water pump NOT being affected by removing the power steering pump belt.

Manual steering? Man, you must have gotten quite the workout. Double up on your spinach intake tonight.

I love the Murphy Anderson inspired art by Delbo. Great images in all 3 panels!

It rubs the lotion on its skin or Burkey gets the hose again!  Very nice creepy face of the Spectre to bid us farewell like a horror host.  The bottom design comes right out of a Saul Bass design to entangle us into the maze.

This Delbo story had definite 60's era design elements.  Good text to go with the ending.

I know Delbo is credited as the inker, but this really looks like Sid Greene.

There was Speculation that Jack Sparling may have done the pencils or the inks.

It's a good story when it begins with car trouble and ends with great art. From no descriptions to full fledged tales of art adventures. They grow up so fast
