DescriptionIn Bob Kanigher's story "The Luck of Easy," Sgt Rock's patrol defends a farm from Nazis, and the farmer's wife gives birth at the end of the story. Dialogue like "Signor" and "Paesano" makes me think we're in Spain, but I don't know enough about Sgt Rock's exploits to say more. The story title recalls Bret Harte’s 1868 short story “The Luck of Roaring Camp,” in which the birth of a prostitute’s baby transforms the behavior of the men in a California gold prospecting settlement. The tale is considered an important snapshot of the blue collar society it describes. Kanigher may well have read the story in school, though by the publication of this page, it had become obscure. The peasant on the right side of the middle tier seems to have been drawn to look like a particular person. I wondered if it might be a celebrity like Tony Curtis. One artist suggested that he looked like Neal Adams. Like many of his war comics colleagues, Heath knows his military hardware well. But he's not practiced drawing infants, who have proportionally larger heads than adults do. Judging by the size of the head, this one is extremely premature and unlikely to survive the night. Don't tell Sgt Rock! Social/Sharing |

If that's an end page, Heath leaves us with a more hopeful ending than ever for a war story. Normally, you'd only see a flower growing from a battlefield, but you get Rock's genuine affection here for a baby that will inspire him to keep fighting.

And that baby grew up to be... Renee Montoya, a.k.a. The Question! (Not really. I can't back that up.)

Or maybe Inigo Montoya! :-)
But still a very nice end page!
