Description

In the game of life, as the old saying goes, "nobody starts at the top!" That is probably even more true in the world of comics. Many a great talent got their start working on things that some of them might rather not wish to remember. Some small-time, forgettable books and the like. But part of the fun in obtaining original comic art, is getting a piece by one of those legends from the time when they weren't one. And that's certainly the case here with this page, as I'm sure at the time, no one expected the guy who was drawing it, would become a living rockstar (not just in the comic world, but real life, too)!

Nth Man was certainly a title that wasn't destined to last very long (and it didn't). But aside from some very trippy kinds of stories, mixing new age ideas of what reality is and the harshness of Cold War intrigue, the series has the great distinction of being the very first Marvel book to feel the touch of one of the pre-eminent rockstar artists of 90's comics, the one and only Dale Keown! While he had done some small press stuff before this, and would go on to much bigger things later, this is where he really got his start to becoming the superstar we all know today.

This specific page gives some details on the past of our title hero, but isn't very significant in any major way. But what I like about it, is how you can see some of the artists who have influenced Keown's own style. You can't look at panels two and four, for example, and not tell me you don't see John Byrne's style as an inspiration in Dale's own work. It shows just how one generation can make an impact on another, in ways great and small, and how even those we consider "superstars" have those whom they admired and helped to push them to do what they do so well.

The Gods did not spring up overnight and a superstar isn't born, they are created. But all of them started somewhere and I'm very happy to have a page from the beginnings of one of the biggest superstars of comics in the 90's (and even today). And that today is also his birthday, only increases that gratification exponentially. So, Happy 62nd birthday, Dale Keown! May the art you produce in the next 35 years, be as impactful, impressive, and fun as your art from the last 35 years has been!
