Description

Here is an example of the varied interest and resourcefulness of Paul Goldberg. Not only did he seek out art from comic strip, editorial and magazine artists, he also sought out the artist for Mr. Zip! The artist was unknown, so Paul wrote a letter to the USPS asking who the artist was. Once he knew the artist was Howard Wilcox, Paul sent a letter to Wilcox at the ad agency he was working at.

Here is Mr. Zip by his creator, Howard Wilcox with Cunningham and Walsh. The original Wilcox design would be refined by Post Office Department artist Joe Lawrence to become the Mr. Zip your parents and grand parents know and loved.

It’s now hard to remember a time when we didn’t use zip codes, but before 1964 they didn’t exist! Crazy. Right? Mr. Zip was the mascot the United Postal Service used to get people to use zip codes. He originally was created for a different purpose; to convince customers of Chase Manhattan to use bank by mail.

The USPS has redesigned Mr. Zip and is licensing him for others to use. Here is an April 2024 article on the NEW Mr. Zip.
