DescriptionIt’s Christmastime again! ANGELS ABOUND!! :)Our focus lands on the X-Men’s Angel for our last (of 3) Yuletide sightings this year…. Warren Worthington’s the Third! Brian Bendis’s one-two punch on the writing chores of both All-New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men (much like his previous concurrent runs on New Avengers and Mighty/Dark/“Avengers” Avengers) allowed for some -super- fun narrative texture in both books. Each book had significant tonal differences from the other, but some fantastic sparks would fly when the separate storylines would start to come into close proximity. Bendis definitely made the most out of the opportunity to play in the X-corner of the Marvel universe. This page is a fun example of those books colliding…. We get Angel, Young Scott and Young Jean (representing the old guard / “All-New”), Old Scott and Emma (from the current “Uncanny” group), and Bendis’s and Bachalo’s “next generation” of X-talent standing strong in the form of Eva Bell (Tempus), Christopher Muse (Triage), and Fabio Medina (Goldballs) in panel 3. Also, to have a Bachalo page with a couple foreground figures swathed in zipatone (or modern zipatone substitute) feels like I have -finally- arrived, too. :) I’ve always loved Chris’s stylistic use of zip to backlight a panel and pop out exactly the element(s) Chris wants popped, and although it’s technically not true zip (due to its unavailability - this is a stat-like printout that features the dotted visual texture, glued down onto the page - you can see a blip of the bare OA peek out from underneath Emma’s coat in the bottom corner of panel 1), it’s the best we can do. :) Having Chris return to draw Uncanny (while the mighty Stuart Immonen took the art chores on All-New) was a fist-pumpin’, slam-dunkin’, double-barreled tag team of an art dream come true for me (and, I’m sure, many others), and I feel -very- fortunate to have some fun examples from this era. Many thanks again, Alex, and Happy Holidays to all of CAF! Social/Sharing |

When you were here before
Couldn't look you in one eye
You're just like an Angel
Your Jean makes me cry
You float like an Emma
In a beautiful world
I wish it’s Bachalo
Your New X-Men special
But I'm on team
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
Time don't belong here

Thanks to you and a few other friends, I've slowly but surely come to really enjoy and appreciate Bachalo's work, Jason! It's not that I eve disliked it, mind you, rather it was always just too stylistically abstract for my tastes. But I really enjoy seeing people post pages now!

Great write-up (as usual!) Jason, and a great page. You've covered all the bases and that zip really is uber-cool. If you'd like an overlay for the missing panel, hit me up!
