DescriptionPrince Rudolf continues his diary during the lengthy trip from Vienna to inner Russia: “In Moscow we change trains, a small convoy destined for pilgrims who push on to the Ural mountains towards the monastery of Verkhotur’e. Sometimes I wonder if I’m not pursuing a crazy mission, and if Maria is not even crazier to follow me. I’m taking this journey to talk to a woman who claims to be the greatest medium in the world. And for what? To find a man who, for all I know, might as well be long dead. But I have to admit that I like this kind of adventure. If I had settled for the easy life of court, I would still be with my wife Stefania… Bottom line, these crazy and senseless actions are part of my character.” “We have arrived! Look. This is Verkhotur’e.” “Good evening. Maybe you can help us...” This whole sequence is another example of how Italian comics are a writer-driven experience. These last four pages could have been skipped if plot were paramount, but Italian writers revel in having their characters pour out their hearts at length. It also gives the artists plenty of opportunity to draw pretty scenes. Verkhotur’e is of course a real place, a Russian town whose population declined from 11,000 to 9,000 in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Social/Sharing |
