DescriptionAs I mentioned in my writeup for the “On Your Left” jogging scene, I like the idea of pairing Cap moments that call back to earlier lines of dialogue. They were a hallmark of writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley, who wrote all three Cap films, Infinity War and Endgame, and one of the many connective tissues that bound the larger MCU together.Under Scott’s deft hand, here we not only get the payoff to the “On your left” line from the beginning of The Winter Soldier, but also the ultimate “I can do this all day” moment in that top panel. Here we have Steve, battered and bruised, and in the immediate wake of Thanos breaking his unbreakable shield and sending him flying across the battle field. But not beaten. Never beaten. Alone and injured, he straps the shield tight around his wounded arm and walks slowly back into the fray… to face not only Thanos, but his hoard as well. Everything about this moment screams “I can do this all day.” To me, it’s the ultimate culmination of the line they set up at the very beginning of The First Avenger, and Scott captures it so well by pulling back the “camera” and utilizing a thin, horizontal panel. What’s so great about this moment is Steve knows the odds are insurmountable. He knows he’s walking to his death. But he doesn’t like bullies, no matter where they’re from, so he’ll fight on until his last breath. Then, out of nowhere, hope comes calling. Scott brings that hope to life perfectly here with some inspired storytelling choices, starting with the three panels of the second tier. Not only does he create a cinematic pan effect by increasing the panel size and adjusting Cap’s figure placement, he also guides our eye to Sam using Cap’s arm, which in turn takes us on the diagonal back to Cap in the final panel. What’s more, he lets that key moment stand out by eschewing borders and bleeding the drawing to the edges, encouraging our eye to linger on Cap for an extra beat. Exceptional storytelling from an exceptional talent. Social/Sharing |

Great callback! It has humor and punch without needing to show a punch.

That first panel really is an "I can do this all day" moment, and I fully expected him to say that. And then they drop an "on your left" callback. Love the shift in Steve's expression from one of despair and defeat in the middle panels to joy and hope in that last panel. Congrats on the paired commissions!
