Zatanna 3 p 17 - Esteban Maroto

Esteban Maroto took Amethyst and Zatanna into new territory in a pair of mini series that were as close as mainstream DC got to Vertigo at the time. I've been trying to find the right page from either mini for several years and was thrilled to pick up this one.

Written by Lee Marrs, the mini tried to put a new, punk rock adjacent spin on Zatanna - who, up until then - had largely been known for her fairly 2D JLA membership and Alan Moore's juicy asides in mid-80s Swamp Thing. Whether the story held up is a bit of a debate, but Maroto's art certainly has. As different from all of her previous appearances as you could imagine, Maroto quickly gave Zatanna's adventures a decidedly horror feel.

His take on her didn't last long but it's hard to argue that it didn't leave an outsized impression.
