DescriptionWhat I did on my holiday or Good Weekend.Does anyone really like listening to people talk about their holidays and then flick through the photographs they took when they were on their break? I do, as it gives me an opportunity to experience the holiday vicariously. However, last weekend I was able to enjoy the holiday first hand. What is it about lakes that make them a magnet for comic conventions? I can say with one-hundred-percent certainty that I will never attend the Great Lakes comic convention in the US, or the Lago di Como comic festival in Italy but I thought I could just about manage the five hours plus of travel it would take me to get to The Lakes International Comic Art Festival in Bowness-On-Windermere in the Lake District in the United Kingdom especially if I kept in mind what I could obtain by going there. It would be incorrect to say the LICAF took over the village of Bowness for the duration of the festival but they definitely had a significant presence with overhead banners, posters in windows, and those cardboard sleeves around lamp-posts promoting the convention. I wonder how it compares to what happens when the convention comes to town in Lucca or Angoulême (have never been and never will be going there either). I think it was a good thing that the events, signings and panels took place at different venues dotted about the village but which were all within easy walking distance as it forced you explore the surrounding environment, an environment that it seemed people came from all around the world to visit without the incentive of a comic convention being there. It was a comics festival in the more traditional sense of the words where the emphasis was on reading comics. There was no charity original art auction, no cosplay, no back issues comic dealer presence, no original art dealer tables. The only comics available were generally alternative or self-published titles being sold by their publishers or creators. There was one main bookseller who was set apart from the signing tables so there was no hard sell about creators signing books bought only from the authorised bookseller. When I first started to research accommodation in the area someone recommended an Airbnb and although I did spend some time looking into that I am quite old school so opted for the main hotel on the hill in the centre of Bowness which in the end proved to be very fortuitous. I was 15 minutes early for the first signing of the weekend which was Sean and Jacob Phillips at adjoining tables so to kill some time I decided to have a drawing done by the comics creator closest the entrance and whose name I recognised. Although Roger Langridge had some pre-drawn illustrations for sale of one of the creators-owned characters he is most associated with – Knuckles the Malevolent Nun – I asked him if he would be willing to do a drawing of the same character in my sketch book. He must have spent close to 30 minutes pencilling, inking and colouring the above drawing of Knuckles which he said he was not tired of drawing and also it was not identical to any of the drawings of the same character in his portfolios. During that time he was able to conduct a conversation with me about his career. He had won four Harvey awards and an Eisner award, he collaborated with Chris Samnee – who is currently having a bit of a moment – on a Thor mini-series which came out just before the first Thor movie. This comic, I think he said, had won a couple of awards and was a fan favourite at the time but which I had missed so it was definitely something to catch up on as it has been collected into an affordable trade. RL’s collaborator on Kuuckles, Cornelius Stone, is a bit technophobic so communication between them can be protracted and/or intermittent so that is one of the reasons why there does not seem to have been any new Knuckles material of late. Whilst RL was carrying out the drawing I leafed through his portfolios. He had a wide selection of miniature drawings of Hulk, Thor, Superman, any number of the Muppets, Popeye and Olive Oyl, but as I did want to duplicate any characters I already had, albeit by different artists, I chose Metamorpho, which was so reasonably priced he was almost giving it away. Meeting and talking to Roger Langridge was a very pleasant experience to kick off the weekend, and I would recommend anybody who has the opportunity to connect with him. Thank you, Mr Langridge! Underrated cartoonist! Every piece by Langridge will have the essence of the character seen through his specific sense of humor. They are often too meticulous in detail to make you think they are meant as caricature at first.

“Humorous” cartoonists never seem to get the same due as their “serious”, dramatic counterparts. Early Clowes and early Bagge is seen as lesser in comparison with the later work. I much prefer Woody Allen’s early “funny” movies to his later output. One day I hope Roger Langridge, who has an extensive body of work, will reap the benefits of the hard yards he is putting in.

Oh, man. I remember Knuckles. I think I might still have it some place in my collection. Love it.
