Batman by David Finch

By far the most popular artist at this year's FACTS Fall Edition in Ghent was David Finch. No real surprise, considering the popularity of his work on Cyberforce at Top Cow, and his super star work at Marvel and DC Comics. Whether it's Ultimate X-Men, Bendis' (New) Avengers, Batman, Justice League - we all have some Finch in our collections. Logically, his lines were 20 person-long all day.

Personally, I always liked his pin-up work and hyper-detailed rendered figures. You know, some of that typical 90s stuff. But I like it on specific characters. Like Spider-Man or Batman - a character David's very familiar with.

My favorite story of his is the "Fallen Son" one-shot with Spider-Man, which he honored with a great sketch for me a few years ago. Now, I wanted a Dark Knight.

Knowing his popularity, my mission was clear: get there as fast as possible. I rushed to his table and got lucky: first in line. Then the waiting game begun, while talking to some fellow collectors.

Luckily, David arrived early and immediately started on my sketch - officially, the "Large Remark" option. Catching up with him was great. While he's not the most talkative and honed in on his sketch work, he definitely made an effort to chat.

What keeps surprising me every time I see David, is how genuinely humble he is. Considering his star status, David is probably the most humble person in comics. He also took part in some panels, which once again underlined just how kind and nice he is.

In the end, he overspent the allotted remark time by quite a bit on this, and created this almost full figure A4 pencil and ink iteration of Batman.
