Jeff MacNelly (1947-2000) was one of the truly great modern ink-slinging cartoonists. Whether political cartoons or comic strips, there were few who could push the ink as well as MacNelly. Besides Shoe and his editorial cartoons, MacNelly was well-known for his cartoon illustration drawn for Dave Barry’s wonderful columns. I’m very pleased to be able to offer an uncommon example of one of those pieces. The column this cartoon was done for was subtitled "Notes on Western Civilization" and focused on dog obedience, or lack thereof. The column stars Barry's dogs Zippy and Earnest, who were frequent heroes in Barry's columns. The column, which is really quite funny, is pictured in the additional images. The drawing by MacNelly is flat-out wonderful, as the dog reprimands Dave for slobbering on the funnies. The line work, particularly the hatching and cross-hatching, is simply terrific. I mean, just look at that combination of contour line and shading. MacNelly packs so much information into a relatively small space, keeping everything clear and lively. The piece appeared in print as early as April 2, 1989. The artwork is drawn on a 12”x 9” heavyish stock paper and is in Excellent condition. I am loathe to part with this piece, but am fundraising for something else, so my loss with be some lucky collector’s gain.
