I first noticed
Emma Kubert's work on a Kickstarter project called
Willowbrook. I took a (minor) risk and backed the project. My additional perk was a
watercolor by Emma of the leads - Eliza and Willow, the cat.
More recently, she's created a series called
Inkblot that is - in her words - "about a mischievous black cat with the uncanny ability to do…anything." Inkblot reminds me of
Felix the Cat a bit.
I've really enjoyed her work and decided at the 2024 Baltimore Comic Con that I'd ask if she was doing commissions and she agreed to do one after I made my pitch.
The result is a "
virgin cover," i.e., one without trade dress. I think it's gorgeous.
Inkblot seems to have transported Sugar's room along with Sugar and Spike to the one of the realms that Inkblot explores. In this case, it's the "Forestlands, which is where the elves and smaller forest creatures (like birds, etc.) live."
Clearly the floor of the room isn't what it ought to be. :)
Also, S&S are playing with toy, stuffed Inkblots - or are they toys. You'll have to read the issue to know!
Oh, in case it's not obvious, she's
Andy Kubert's daughter and
Joe Kubert's granddaughter.
The piece was created using "ink, watercolor, and markers." She likes "combining mediums because [she] can get more detail out of the ink and markers" while using "watercolor for the overall look."
