DescriptionJack Davis was a founding member of MAD magazine's "Usual Gang of Idiots" and was super prolific. I always think of MAD when I think of his humorous work, as his work was synonymous with MAD humor for a very long time. This MAD caricature satirizing Elvis is classic MAD irreverence and reflects the magazine's humorous assault on almost all social and political issues of the day. Sadly they were not colorfast and the blue ran down to the bottom of the illustration...What do you mean they are non repro, blue lines? That song would suck. Don't step on my non repro, blue suede lines. Ah, huh, huh.

From the year of Elvis' first release! Jack captures the King's loosey-goosey moves and lip curl perfectly :)

We probably associate most of our comics legends with the super-hero genre. But although Jack Davis didn't do a lot of super-hero work, he is no less a comics Master. This is a fantastic piece that truly exemplifies his mastery of the art form.

It might be more funny if the censors wanted to put black bars to block off his hips!

Love this five panel splash of Elvis singing and dancing from MAD magazine. It's a terrific parody of the spirit of Elvis. But that's just a hint of what Jack Davis was capable of. How many other aritsts could draw horror comics for EC Comics, then pivot to drawing comic book parodies for MAD magazine, then switch over to drawing covers for Time magazine and TV Guide? Davis was the renaissance man of comic art and there seemed to be no end to what he could do. Love that you have this terrific example of his enormous talent. I hope that one day I'll find the perfect example of Jack Davis art for myself. Maybe one of the few MAD covers he drew, that'd be cool.
