DescriptionThis piece is easy to overlook and just too cool not to post. Paul Chadwick is the comic book artist and writer who created a great character, named “Concrete.” Ron Lithgow was a normal man whose brain was involuntarily transplanted by aliens into a giant stone body. Other than a brief appearance by the aliens in the first story, the science fiction/fantasy aspect does not drive the narrative. Instead, Lithgow is an everyman whose unique point of view is used to tell interesting stories about the human condition. Chadwick is clearly an environmentalist, and these themes also play out. The first Concrete story was published in 1986, and there have been a series of short (4-10 issue) stories over the years.Pages of the comic art are hard to come by, as Chadwick has not parted with many. This is a 20x20 in portrait of Richard Nixon. Chadwick says: “The Nixon portrait was done in art school, probably 1978 or 79. I graduated in 1979. It was painted for Don Weller and Mike Gaine's team-taught class, Advanced Illustration. Weller had a jaunty Peter-Max sort of illustration style, linear with colored inks. Gaines was an art director at an ad agency. They were quite the comedy team. The idea was that it illustrated a psychological profile of Nixon. Hence the faux-mathematical lines imposed. It's acrylic -- I seldom used slow-drying oils at Art Center College of Design. I had one eye on doing movie posters when I was in art school -- and got to do a handful once I was out, although I never gave Drew Struzan anything to worry about. This portrait was probably done with that in mind, showing I could do a likeness.” Social/Sharing |
