DescriptionIn 1976, the Republican Party had itself a bit of a family feud. On one side was President Gerald Ford, the steady hand who’d stepped in after Nixon resigned, trying to bring some calm back to Washington. Ford was the sitting president, but he hadn’t been elected to the job—he was appointed vice president, then moved up when Nixon left. Folks saw him as decent and practical, but not exactly electric. Then along came Ronald Reagan, the former Hollywood actor turned governor of California. Reagan was full of cowboy charm, hardline conservative ideals, and big ideas about shrinking government and boosting defense. He didn’t think Ford was conservative enough, especially on taxes, foreign policy, and dealing with the Soviets. The two duked it out in a tough primary. Reagan gave Ford a real scare—winning several key states and nearly taking the nomination. It all came down to the Republican National Convention in Kansas City, where Ford barely edged him out. Though Ford got the nomination, the party was split, and he ended up losing the general election to Jimmy Carter. As for Reagan? He dusted himself off, learned from the loss, and came back swinging four years later in 1980—this time, winning the presidency in a landslide. Social/Sharing |

Ford was the incumbent in 76, but Ronnie was a star and was making a name for himself which would pay off in '80.

Ford was tarnished after pardoning Nixon after the Watergate Scandal. Nixon replaced Agnew with Ford when Agnew resigned as VP in 1973.
