CHARACTER STUDY 2

I am both happy and sad to share this page with fellow collectors, especially those who, like me, think that Don Heck was one of the greatest comic artists of all time, and was the best of the best during the early-to-mid sixties. Heck was apparently working with a new type of art board and was doing some lettering on the reverse side of a character study he had done. As you can see from reading his notes, he was essentially writing like the page was a diary. Entries are made over several days in late November and early December of 1994. It shows a very personal side of the artist, filled with the mundane: a few misspelled words, references to his pets [Pushy and Lady], and several mentions of physical pain ["back trouble and poor health in general"]. There is also mention of "Holly's passing." Was Holly Don's wife? Unfortunately, none of the articles I've read about Don Heck has ever given details about his personal life.

Don Heck died from lung cancer February 23, 1995, less than three months after these lettered notes to himself were written.
